Nissan Unveils Some Secrets of the Future Electric LEAF

In addition to a new SUV-style design, the new Nissan LEAF features smart solutions for thermal and energy management.

The third generation of the Nissan LEAF introduces several innovations that facilitate the daily use of an electric vehicle. Among these, the thermal conditioning and battery cooling systems play a crucial role in enhancing performance and comfort.

One of the key elements is the battery conditioning linked to navigation. When a driver inputs a destination into the navigation system, the car analyzes the route to estimate the demand on the battery. If the journey is deemed to be low-demand (few inclines, moderate speed), the car automatically reduces cooling to conserve energy. This helps to optimize range. Conversely, in cases of anticipated high demand, the system adjusts cooling to prepare the battery for optimal performance.

This system also comes into play during rapid charging, especially during summer months. If the car anticipates an easy journey after charging, it temporarily adjusts the maximum temperature tolerated by the battery. This allows for accelerated charging, providing up to 250 km of range in just 14 minutes. Nissan has also reimagined the thermal coupling and architecture around the charging module, to enhance heat dissipation while ensuring ease of use for the customer.

The new LEAF also offers practical features like Vehicle-to-Load (V2L). This system allows power to be supplied to external devices from the car’s battery, using outlets located in the cabin and trunk (up to 1500 watts combined). An adapter also enables the use of an external charging socket.

Finally, in specific markets like Japan, the Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) function allows the LEAF to supply electricity to a home or store energy from solar panels.
