MG5: Details, Range, and Price of the Electric Station Wagon

The MG 5 aims to balance electric performance, practicality, and a reasonable price. Here’s what you need to know about this Chinese model.

The MG 5 is currently the only electric station wagon on the market, aside from the exclusive Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo. Of course, this monopoly situation won’t last long. Peugeot and Opel are, for example, planning to offer electric versions of their 308 SW and Astra Sports Tourer.

This model has been on sale in France since March 2022. Unlike the MG ZS EV, it has not yet received a facelift.

Dimensions and Design of the MG 5

The MG 5 measures 4.6 meters in length, 1.82 meters in width, and 1.52 meters in height. This vehicle is therefore comparable in dimensions to a Peugeot 308 SW or a Renault Mégane Estate. Regarding cargo capacity, MG announces 479 liters with the rear seats up, and 1,367 liters when folded down.

The lines of the MG 5 are balanced but lack flair in the eyes of some. The dashboard is also quite traditional. It features a 10.25-inch touchscreen. Another 7-inch screen behind the steering wheel replaces traditional needle gauges. It comes as standard across the entire range.

Motor and Battery of the MG 5

Standard range or Extended range: two versions are available in the MG 5 lineup. The first has a 50.3 kWh battery, powering a 130 kW motor with 260 Nm of torque. The Extended range model has a 61.1 kWh battery. Torque remains at 280 Nm, but motor power drops to 115 kW, without significant impact on performance. Regardless of the version chosen, the Chinese electric station wagon accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 185 km/h.

Range and Charging of the MG 5

With the 50.3 kWh battery, the MG 5 can theoretically travel 320 km on a single charge. The larger battery extends the range to 400 km (WLTP mixed cycle in both cases). For wall box charging, the vehicle is equipped with an 11 kW onboard charger.

On fast chargers, the MG 5 Standard Range handles up to 70 kW. The Extended Range model performs slightly better in this regard, with a maximum charge power of 87 kW. In both cases, a charge from 0 to 80% can be completed in about thirty minutes with compatible chargers (notably Ionity or Electra stations).

Price and Equipment of the MG 5

Like all models from the manufacturer, the MG 5 features particularly competitive prices to gain market share. The base version is sold at €34,490, before ecological bonus deduction. This is lower than the price of a small city car like the Peugeot e-208, which starts at €34,800.

The MG 5 lineup is structured around two finishes: Comfort and Luxury. The entry-level Comfort includes as standard adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, lane keeping assist, manual air conditioning, keyless start system, heated front seats, parking sensors, a rearview camera, a 10.25″ touchscreen, and a 7″ digital gauge. Sixteen-inch wheels, LED headlights, and roof rails are also included as standard.

One step above, the MG 5 Luxury adds a 360-degree camera, rain sensors, automatically folding side mirrors, automatic climate control, one-touch window controls for all four windows, and a photochromatic interior mirror. The wheels increase to 17 inches, and the fabric upholstery of the Comfort version is replaced with black faux leather trim.
