This is the star model of the automotive back-to-school season. The MG4 electric essentially acts as an automotive troublemaker, with performance worthy of the best European models, all at a highly competitive price.

Compact 100% electric and plug-in hybrid cars better watch out! The MG4 electric is now on sale, and order books are full. After launching the SUV MG ZS EV, the first model of the new MG in the French market, with some success, and with lesser success the station wagons MG5 and SUV Marvel R, the focus now is on models at “affordable” prices and eligible for a €6,000 bonus (€5,000 from January 1, 2023).

Dimensions and Style of the MG4 Electric

A sedan with reasonable size, far from inflation in terms of dimensions, that’s what the MG4 embodies. It measures just under 4.30 meters, exactly 4.29 meters, and boasts a good turning radius, making it easy to maneuver in city streets and especially easy to park. The bodywork is also well protected and resists minor knocks fairly well.

In terms of style, electric cars try to stand out. While competitors like the Volkswagen ID.3 and Renault Mégane E-Tech Electric offer a certain originality, the MG4 Electric is more conventional, with an aesthetic inspiration drawn from well-established models like the Nissan Micra and the Toyota Yaris Cross.

Motor and Battery MG4 Electric

The advantage of the MG4 Electric is that from launch, it offers a real range including the famous entry-level Standard 51 kWh version with 170 hp. Additionally, at the higher end, there is a model with 204 hp and 250 Nm of torque, equipped with a 64 kWh battery. Paradoxically, the smaller model has better performance. This is because its lower weight, about 30 kg less, compensates for the lower power, especially since the torque matches the 204 hp version. Acceleration is excellent (0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds) and the handling is also top-notch.

However, MG will not stop there, with the upcoming arrival of a MG4 Mulan Triumph Edition. Available information indicates it will be equipped with two electric motors developing a total of 455 hp and 600 Nm of torque. It will be built on a four-wheel-drive platform and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds.

Range and Charging

The best approach is to refer to our previous test of the MG4 Electric. During our test in fall 2022 in Provence, with temperatures around 15 degrees, we measured an average consumption of 18.9 kWh/100 km in mixed cycle, resulting in a real range of 270 km, compared to the 350 km claimed by the Chinese manufacturer. The city average is more favorable, at 17 kWh/100 km (approximately 300 km real range). On highways, the numbers rise sharply, with our onboard computer showing consumption up to 24 kWh/100 km, for a real range of only 210 km. A small-battery version would therefore appeal more to city dwellers.

Regarding charging, the base MG4 is equipped with an onboard charger of 6.6 kW (charge from 10% to 100% in 7.5 hours and DC fast charging at 117 kW from 10% to 80% in 40 minutes). For the larger 64 kWh battery version, consumption figures are slightly different: in mixed cycle (18 kWh/100 km), offering about 340 km of real range (435 km according to MG in the Luxury finish). In city use, you can expect around 16 kWh/100 km (about 400 km theoretical), while on the highway, the consumption can reach 25 kWh/100 km (around 250 km theoretical). The faster charging capability is provided by an 11 kW onboard charger (from 10% to 100% in 6.5 hours) and the ability to accept 135 kW DC fast charging (from 10% to 80% in 35 minutes).
