MG copies the Tesla model (and it’s awesome)!

MG adopts Tesla’s recipe with its new electric models IM5 and IM6 unveiled at Goodwood.
MG no longer hides its ambitions in the electric vehicle universe. At the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the brand unveiled two new models, the IM5 sedan and the IM6 SUV. Two vehicles with distinctive aesthetics but based on a common technical foundation. This strategic choice is far from trivial; it is simply about adopting the formula that catapulted Tesla to success with the Model 3 and Model Y, and has since inspired newcomers like Xiaomi with the SU7 and YU7.

Same platform, same batteries, same engines; MG applies the same logic of streamlining to maximize its market presence without multiplying developments. With a sedan to attract efficiency enthusiasts and an SUV to meet family demands, the brand aims at a broad spectrum of customers while optimizing its costs and timelines.
An MG technology that impresses!
Technically, the MG IM5 and IM6 rely on a new 800 V architecture, allowing for ultra-fast charging (10 to 80% in 17 minutes with the 100 kWh battery). The IM5 Long Range promises up to 710 km of range (in CLTC cycle, thus about 600 km in Europe), while performance is outstanding. The distinguished Sino-British models are quick off the mark with a 0 to 100 km/h time of 3.2 seconds for the IM5 and 3.5 seconds for the IM6.

The interior is designed to be technological and high-end, featuring a massive 26.3-inch curved display, a second 10.5-inch touchscreen, a 20-speaker audio system (including four in the ceiling), a panoramic roof, and reinforced insulation glazing.
On the driving assistance side, MG collaborates with Momenta, offering advanced semi-autonomous driving and an automated parking system. The IM5 stands out in the city with rear steering technology that reduces the turning radius to 9.98 meters.

Initially, both models will be sold exclusively in the United Kingdom. Prices start at £39,450 (around €46,000) for the IM5 and £47,995 (around €55,800) for the IM6. This positions them directly against Tesla in the market it pioneered.

MG also presented at Goodwood the Cyberster Black, a high-end version of its electric convertible, the urban concept Cyber X, and the EX4, a muscular and fully electric reinterpretation of the Metro 6R4.
