MG Cyberster: The electric roadster appears in an initial teaser

MG is making a comeback into the segment that made its name.

After experiencing bankruptcy, MG was acquired by the Chinese Nanjing Automobile Group, which itself was soon taken over by Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC). Following these upheavals, the British automaker adopted a very pragmatic view of automobiles. No more niche markets — MG Motor has focused on high-volume segments, with competitive models, often electric, and priced to be unbeatable.

Overall, this strategy has worked well, and the new MG can now return to the world of fun driving. And it definitely plans to do so with the upcoming Cyberster roadster, which has just been teased in its first trailer.

An eponymous concept, revealed at the Shanghai Motor Show 2021, provided an initial hint at the style that the Cyberster will adopt. Later patents clearly showed the lines of the production vehicle. The new teaser video confirms that the Cyberster will feature a soft top, like MG roadsters of the past. It also shows gullwing doors, a small rear wing extending from the trunk, and arrow-shaped taillights already seen in the patents.

An MG electric sports car?

The fully electric MG Cyberster concept promised a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in less than 3 seconds and a range of 800 km. The production model will likely stick to an electric motor but possibly with slightly lower performance. Nonetheless, it should deliver significantly better performance than current MG models, which have no sporty ambitions at all.

The electric roadster is expected to debut in 2024, the year of MG’s centenary. In its own way, it will symbolize the progress of the Chinese automotive industry, which is no longer afraid to venture into segments where purchase price is not a central criterion.
