Lucid Wants to Outperform the Tesla Model Y

The California manufacturer Lucid aims to compete with the Tesla Model Y with a more affordable crossover planned for 2026

Lucid Motors, known for its high-end Air sedan capable of exceeding 800 km of range, is now looking to expand its customer base. After the Gravity SUV, expected soon, the brand is preparing a more compact and affordable model: the “Project Midsize.” This future crossover, priced around €45,000, is meant to mark Lucid’s entry into the most competitive segment of the electric market.

The goal is clear: to achieve mass production and finally gain profitability. The vehicle will be based on a new platform designed for several models, including a more rugged SUV. Early prototypes reveal a sleek design, close to the Model Y, with a slender silhouette and horizontal lights across the entire width.

Lucid bets on technology and price

Lucid also promises high energy efficiency, about 500 km of range, and an advanced driving assistance system evolving up to level 4 thanks to an electronic architecture developed with Nvidia. This future model would thus become the most technologically advanced in the lineup while being the most accessible.

But the challenge goes beyond innovation alone. Lucid, still young in the market, struggles to turn its technological image into commercial success. Fewer than 9,000 Airs have been sold in 2024, a disappointing figure compared to initial ambitions, and 2025 doesn’t look much better. Producing a more affordable vehicle on a large scale will therefore represent a real industrial and financial challenge.

Already a new Duster in 2026?

Announced for production at the end of 2026, this new SUV, which could be named Lucid Earth, embodies the manufacturer’s desire to become more accessible. It remains to be seen if this offensive will be enough to elevate the brand to the level of the sector’s giants. Because in electric vehicles, technology isn’t everything: only the ability to deliver volumes will matter.
