Industrial Paradox: Lucid Motors Faces a Critical Period Despite Technologically Remarkable Electric Cars.

There is urgency at Lucid Motors. The American premium electric vehicle manufacturer has just announced a net loss exceeding one billion dollars in the second quarter of 2026, compared to about 539 million the previous year. This abyss now compels its new CEO, Silvio Napoli, to launch a deep restructuring.

Lucid openly acknowledges its mistakes. “We have disappointed on several fronts, and for far too long”, Napoli stated, referring to unmet commitments, premature launches, inadequate service, and a too-slow response to quality issues.

The remedy is expected to be brutal. Lucid has already cut 18% of its workforce in June, following an initial cut of 12% earlier in the year. A second production team has also been eliminated at the Arizona plant, while several executives have left the company. The goal now is to improve cash flow by $1.4 billion in 2026.

The Lucid Cosmos Pushed to 2027

Even more worrying, the Lucid Cosmos, a more affordable electric SUV expected to be priced under $50,000, has been pushed to the second half of 2027. This model was supposed to allow Lucid to move out of the niche market occupied by the costly Air and Gravity and significantly increase its volumes.

Lucid claims to have sufficient liquidity “well into 2027”. However, with the Cosmos delayed, the company now has to hold on for over a year before the arrival of its potentially salvation model. Support from the Saudi sovereign wealth fund PIF, the majority shareholder, remains crucial.
