Small price and small engine for the Volvo EX30

Volvo EX30

With new features, the Volvo EX30 targets a new clientele with an entry-level engine offering.

In a car landscape where electric vehicles are gaining ground, Volvo seems determined to cover a wide spectrum from large premium SUVs to accessible and versatile compact crossovers. The 100% electric EX30, appreciated for its balance between compactness and performance “the Volvo way”, now includes an entry-level engine, revamped interiors, and technologies such as “Vehicle to Load” (V2L), which allows using the battery as an external power source.

Alexander Petrofski, product manager for the 30/40 range at Volvo, explains: “We are refining our smallest premium electric SUV. By optimizing the user experience, with more sophisticated interiors and smart tech – such as turning the car into a portable battery to charge other devices – we make daily life simpler and more enjoyable.”

Technically, the key novelty is a 110 kW (150 hp) engine paired with a 69 kWh lithium-ion battery, delivering up to 476 km of WLTP range in mixed cycle. This targets urban uses, with enhanced energy efficiency through optimized torque management and improved brake regeneration. The range also includes a P5 Long Range variant with rear-wheel drive (two-wheel drive), which reduces consumption through refined aerodynamics and a more efficient engine control software. For adventure enthusiasts, the EX30 Cross Country comes in two trims: Plus and Ultra, with raised suspension options.

The V2L Finally Available

The V2L function, activated via an adapter on the charging port, utilizes the battery to provide up to 3 kW in bidirectional output, ideal for charging an electric bike or the griddle for a weekend in the countryside. Over-the-air (OTA) updates will roll out a smoother user interface this summer, compatible with existing models via the Volvo cloud.

Aesthetically, two new upholstery options enhance the cabin. The Sable, with beige tones inspired by Scandinavian nights, combines Nordico vegan leather (made from recycled PET) and eco-responsible fabric, with a dark linen insert and black headliner for a subtle contrast. The Nordico Noir Astral opts for a timeless matte black, available in the Black Edition with three exterior colors: Onyx Black, Mist Grey, or Crystal White.

In France, a Business Edition trim, based on Plus, adds metallic paint, heated seats, and steering wheel, suitable for both professionals and individuals. Erik Severinson, sales director, notes: “Affordable premium electric vehicles are booming, and the EX30 is leading the way. These developments broaden access to electric cars without sacrificing quality.”

Now offered starting at €39,100 with the small engine, the EX30 aims to democratize premium electric vehicles. An ambitious but realistic bet, relying on solid engineering and maintaining a distinctly Swedish image despite the Chinese ownership.
