Jeep CJ Surge Concept électrique 2022

For the American tuning show SEMA Show 2022, Jeep presents a retro concept based on the small 4×4 CJ, transformed into an electric vehicle.

Every year, the SEMA Show makes a splash in Las Vegas (USA). This major automotive customization fair has traditionally been a pilgrimage for fans of big V8s and muscle cars. But with ecological transition, electric vehicles are gradually gaining ground, as demonstrated by Jeep’s latest concept, the CJ Surge.

The Jeep Electric Concept in Overdrive

The name Surge is no coincidence, which can be translated as “electrical overcharge.” From the outside, it’s impossible to notice its propulsion system. Jeep does not want to shock the savvy spectators at the SEMA Show by taking a model like the iconic CJ (Civilian Jeep), created in 1944 and produced until 1986.

The small two-door, two-seater open-top SUV retains a retro style, with its “Copper Canyon” orange colors, glossy black accents, and blue “Surf” details. And with its 35-inch tires and bucket seats, it’s far removed from the new electric Jeep Avenger! The CJ Surge features a 200 kW (268 hp) electric motor under the front hood, combined with a 24-module lithium-ion battery. However, the manufacturer does not specify the battery capacity or the vehicle’s range.

So, is it just a show exercise? Not really, because the Jeep CJ Surge “allows Mopar designers and engineers [division of Stellantis] to understand the potential applications of electric vehicle components, in order to offer enthusiasts the ability to build or modify a classic vehicle into a zero-emission version”. Perhaps a future Jeep retrofit program is in preparation?
