Here is the new MG MG4!

The MG MG4 electric gets a new look with a very strange and unique hatchback silhouette revealed in China.

This larger, completely redesigned model may mark the beginning of a second life for the MG4, which was the best-selling electric vehicle in France in 2023. While this evolution is not without interest, it doesn’t quite deliver a wow effect either.

MG, formerly a British manufacturer, has been part of the Chinese group SAIC Motor since 2005. Strangely, its sales are very modest in China, while it has gained recognition internationally, particularly in Europe and India.

According to CarNewsChina, this new generation MG4 measures 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. By comparison, the current version measures 4,287 mm long, 1,836 mm wide, and 1,516 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,705 mm. The new MG4 thus gains size with an extended length of 108 mm and a longer wheelbase by 45 mm, indicating an almost entirely new model.

Too cautious changes?

Why then not have evolved the design more deeply and just settle for a rather dull style? The front end, at least divisive but recognizable, of the first generation has been smoothed and sanitized, while the silhouette takes inspiration from both the MG3 and the electric roadster Cyberster. At the back, a wide light strip and arrow-shaped taillights directly recall the latter.

On the technical side, the new MG4 is powered by a 120 kW electric motor, slightly less powerful than the current one (125 kW). However, it is lighter, with a curb weight of 1,485 kg compared to 1,641 kg for the current model. The battery is based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology. Its capacity has not yet been disclosed.

It remains to be seen whether this ambitious overhaul is only destined for the Chinese market or if it signals a new start for the fallen sales queen in France.
