Volkswagen Group: +42% Increase in Electric Vehicle Sales!

The German group thus consolidates its position as a major player in the electric vehicle market, selling over 141,000 vehicles last year.

The Volkswagen group is doing well, with more than 141,000 battery electric vehicles (BEV) sold so far this year, compared to 99,200 during the same period last year. It must be said that the group is investing in several segments of the automotive market.

Europe is the fastest-growing market in terms of electric vehicles (EVs) sold compared to 2022. According to the brand’s figures, 98,300 fully electric vehicles have been delivered, a 68% increase over last year.

Volkswagen Group offers city electric vehicles, SUVs/Crossovers, and sedans, depending on the chosen brand. The new Volkswagen ID.7 was also showcased at the Shanghai Auto Show. This aims to strengthen its position in the Chinese automotive market.

A good omen for the future?

In the top 3 of the brand’s sales, the Volkswagen ID.4/ID.5 with 41,900 vehicles sold in the first quarter of 2023 is featured. Additionally, the Volkswagen ID.3 (23,600) and the Audi Q4 e-tron (21,300) occupy second and third place respectively.

In terms of market distribution, Europe leads with 98,300 vehicles sold (+68% compared to 2022), followed by China (21,500) and the United States (15,700).

The Chinese market has experienced a 25% decline in Volkswagen EV sales. China indeed has its own brands of electric vehicles (Geely, Aiways, BYD…) that we saw prominently at the Shanghai Auto Show 2023. Volkswagen will therefore find it difficult to compete with Chinese brands on their own turf!

Another surprising statistic is the doubling of sales in the U.S. market. Over 15,700 EVs were sold in the first quarter of 2023 compared to 7,900 in 2022. In the oil-rich country, a gradual transition towards EVs is slowly underway. Especially since U.S. President Joe Biden recently announced offering tax credits to certain electric vehicle brands.

This could appeal to Americans, perhaps the group’s future market?
