Will the upcoming Alfa Romeo Giulia feature a 1,000-horsepower electric motor?

Although it does not generate very high sales volumes, the Alfa Romeo Giulia is expected to continue its journey. Its successor would, however, have little in common with the currently marketed model.

According to the British media Autocar, the next generation of Alfa Romeo Giulia will be fully electric. This change would be accompanied by a drastic increase in power, reaching around 1,000 hp on the flagship model of the range. For comparison, the most powerful Giulia currently available produces 510 hp from its six-cylinder gasoline engine.

Autocar claims to have obtained this information directly from Jean-Philippe Imparato, the head of Alfa Romeo. He reportedly also told them that the car’s range would be around 700 km in WLTP mixed cycle. The new Giulia would also feature an 800-volt architecture, which would allow for very fast charging times.

The 1,000 hp electric Giulia could inherit the Quadrifoglio badge. It would sit at the top of a range that would include other more affordable versions. An entry-level model of around 350 hp and a Veloce with power approaching 800 hp are also on the agenda.

Alfa Romeo gradually says goodbye to internal combustion

If it indeed happens, the launch of this new Giulia will be part of Alfa Romeo’s extensive electrification plan, which is theoretically set to phase out combustion engines by 2027. A rapid transition, which likely wouldn’t have been possible within that timeframe without the integration of the Italian brand into the Stellantis group. This shift in strategy is difficult for some Alfa Romeo enthusiasts to accept, but with the upcoming change in European legislation, it has simply become essential. “If we didn’t do it, Alfa Romeo would die”, Jean-Philippe Imparato affirms on this matter.
