Ford F-150 Lightning Pro SSV: an electric pickup truck for the police

Beast of power, with enormous load and towing capacities, the Ford F-150 Lightning is the new proposal for American police forces.

The electric vehicle is on the path to becoming mainstream. Its sales are rising among private individuals, but also professionals. They adopt it for lower operating costs and now sufficient range for their activities. Even law enforcement agencies are converting their vehicles, leading manufacturers to create specific versions. We already mentioned the Chevrolet Blazer electric “PPV”, here is another vehicle arriving for police use, the Ford F-150 Lightning Pro SSV.

An electric pickup adapted for police

Here, it’s Ford trying to establish electric as a viable solution for police vehicles. The American company chose its new electric pickup, the Ford F-150 Lightning, to appeal to the 12,000 police stations that are clients of the brand.

This Pro SSV (Special Service Vehicle) “is designed to meet specific needs outside of pursuit situations, such as assisting at accident or crime scenes, or providing the capability to tow a boat or trailer.”

Inside, the Ford F-150 Lightning Pro SSV also features seats without lateral reinforcement to improve access, vinyl upholstery that is easier to clean, and roof warning lights. The central console is specific. Goodbye to the large vertical screen, Ford has replaced it with a more modest display, physical controls, and a reinforced central tunnel. The 400-liter front trunk remains, as does the rear bed measuring 1.70 x 1.28 meters.

Same characteristics as the Ford F-150 Lightning

However, the Pro SSV retains the engines and batteries of the electric pickup for private users. The first version offers 452 hp and 1,050 Nm of torque, with the standard 98 kWh battery (the same as the Ford Mustang Mach-E). It can also tow 3.5 tons. The second has a power of 580 horsepower, capable of reaching 100 km/h in less than 4 seconds. This variant can also tow 4,535 kg and includes the larger 131 kWh battery.

The police version of the Ford F-150 Lightning does not increase range, but the civilian version offers between 320 and 515 km per charge. The brand will provide more details at the end of summer, but no launch date has been announced.
