Electric Car: Fiat 500 Top Seller in May 2022

The Fiat city car leads ahead of a Peugeot and a Renault.

While the automotive market experienced its 12th consecutive month of decline (-10%), electric car sales increased by 31.8% in May. With a little over 15,000 registrations, they captured 12% of market share.

For the second consecutive time, the Fiat 500 is leading the way, with 2,129 units sold during the month. More affordable but limited in range, the version with a small battery accounted for 40% of the Italian city’s sales.

Thanks to the success of the 500, Fiat sold more electric than thermal vehicles in May (51% / 49%). But this performance should be taken with caution: Fiat’s lineup is currently limited, and most thermal models are struggling.

The second place in the ranking is held by the Peugeot e-208. The Renault Twingo e-Tech is in third position, ahead of the Zoe.

Meanwhile, Tesla has notably slowed its deliveries recently. None of its models appear in the top 10. Not even the Model 3, which is usually on the podium.

It is also worth noting the rise of the Renault Mégane E-Tech. With 758 units, this compact from the Losange brand becomes the best-selling electric car in its category, ahead of a Citroën e-C4, which continues its steady performance.

More than 70,000 registrations since the beginning of the year

Since the start of the year, electric car sales have reached a little over 70,000 units. The market has grown by 38% compared to the same period in 2021. The Dacia Spring was the best-selling electric car from January to May. It surpasses the Fiat 500 and Peugeot e-208.
