Capri is not over according to Ford

One of the most prestigious names in the Ford lineup is preparing for a grand return to the catalog. But not necessarily in the expected form.

Perhaps you have a vivid memory of a Ford Capri, and you wouldn’t be alone. The “car you always promised yourself,” as Ford marketed it, made a significant impact in the 70s and 80s.

Several cleverly orchestrated teasers from Ford leave no doubt about the upcoming return of the Capri. But surprise, the new version will not be a coupe. Instead, it will be a 100% electric coupe SUV derived from the Explorer. Unfortunately, this is not a surprise, as 2020s customers enjoy high-riding cars with a sporty look and optimal space. Everything that the Capri was not with its Mustang-inspired philosophy, adapted to European tastes. But just when we see what Ford has done with the Mustang name in recent years, one should not be offended. The names remain, the spirits soar.

Another Capri? No, and that’s not a problem

This future Capri will therefore rely on the MEB electric vehicle architecture of the Volkswagen group, used by the American manufacturer as part of the agreement signed between the two brands, which has already seen the launch of the Explorer, as well as cooperation on the latest Ranger and Amarok pickups.

But while using a name is good, honoring a model is better. We expect the model to feature a front end inspired by the original model with a nod to the four headlights of the 80s Capri, thanks to an LED signature.

For the rest, there’s no point in getting lost in hypotheses. Stay tuned in a few days to see if the descendant lives up to its prestigious ancestor.
