Can Ferrari sue Xiaomi for copyright infringement?

On the Maranello side, Xiaomi’s latest creation, the YU7 SUV, is sure to ruffle some feathers. Going as far as to pursue legal action?

When comparing the Xiaomi YU7 and the Ferrari Purosangue, it takes a significant lack of good faith not to notice some striking similarities. And for good reason, Xiaomi has never hidden that the elegant Italian perched high above served as inspiration for its second vehicle. But it’s not just that, and here lies the nuance, because as you can see below, the YU7 SUV mainly adopts the stylistic markers of the Chinese manufacturer’s SU7 sedan. And when this last was released, no one saw any Ferrari-like resemblance!

Xiaomi has unquestionably succeeded in building a strong visual identity with just two models in its catalog, which is a real achievement. Place the Kia IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 side by side and try to find a family resemblance. Apart from the logo, we wish you good luck. On the other hand, between the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, the kinship is obvious. So when it comes to inspiration, we are more inclined to look to Tesla, where the concept of a sedan turned SUV has been reproduced almost identically by Xiaomi.

But let’s look into what the two SUVs hide beneath their bodies with startling similarities. On the Italian side, 4973 mm long and a stunning 65° V12 producing 725 horsepower, transmitting power to all four wheels. On the Chinese side, 4999 mm long with two motors of 220 and 288 kW producing a total of 691 electric horsepower, also transmitted to all four wheels. Besides the engine technology and an extra 400 kg on the scale for Xiaomi, which is certainly quite astonishing…

Fortunately, there is one point that truly makes a difference that no legal expert could ever dispute. The Ferrari Purosangue is priced at 385,000 euros, while the Chinese one should cost… ten times less! Ferrari might want to avoid making waves…
