Chinese manufacturer BYD has introduced its new electric sedan, the Han L, built on its innovative Super e-platform 1000V. This model stands out for its ultra-fast charging technology and a highly competitive starting price of 219,800 yuan, approximately $30,000 or €27,000.
The BYD Han L, equipped with an 83.2 kWh Blade battery, offers impressive charging performance. Thanks to its 1000V architecture, it can recover 400 km of range in just five minutes. A full charge from 0 to 100% takes twenty minutes, while charging from 10% to 70% is achievable in six minutes. Of course, this requires the appropriate charging station, which might cause some headaches in Europe…
Ultra-fast charging that redefines standards
Compared to the electric sedan market, the Tesla Model 3 Long Range, a benchmark in the industry, can add about 275 km of range in fifteen minutes using the latest V4 superchargers. Moreover, the Model 3 Highland is sold in China for the equivalent of €39,000, which is €12,000 more than the Han L!
The BYD Han L is positioned between the Model 3 and the Model S, offering a spacious interior with advanced technologies such as the free “God’s Eye” driver assistance system and the DiPilot 300 autopilot. It boasts a range of 701 km in CLTC cycle. There’s no point in expecting the same in “normal” use, but 600 km is achievable in WLTP cycle. Not extraordinary, but comparable to a good thermal sedan. And if charging time is comparable to a quick bathroom break, the barrier to long-distance travel is significantly lowered. We have long believed that fast charging speed should take precedence over large battery packs for range. BYD is heading in the right direction for us.
By combining ultra-fast charging, long range, and attractive pricing, BYD nearly deals a fatal blow to Tesla, which really didn’t need that.
