At the same price, would you prefer a Renault 5 or a Mégane?

With only 510 euros difference between the two Renault models, why not ask the question?

Renault has objectively negotiated the transition to 100% electric very well with a range that includes the compact Renault 5, the Megane sedan, and the Scenic SUV. One could even include the small Twingo, but this model is at the end of its life and remains in the catalog only to clear out existing stock while waiting for the new version to arrive. There is therefore something for everyone, the best way to cast a wide net.

After deducting the ecological bonus for which both models are logically eligible, we have the Renault 5 at 29,490 euros and the Megane at 30,000 euros. One might think that the bonus will necessarily go to youth and novelty, but that would be far too easy.

Obviously, the spaciousness favors the Megane with 30 cm more and a trunk of 440 liters compared to only 277 liters for the R5. With virtually equal width, passengers will not be too penalized in the Renault 5, but long trips will be more challenging. Power favors the compact with 150 hp against 130 hp for the sedan, and more concerning, the Renault 5 outperforms the Megane outright with an extra 100 km of range! The Megane offers only 315 km in the WLTP cycle, which is very limiting for meeting extra-urban needs.

So which model to choose? If the answer to this question were obvious, Renault would have totally missed the point, but that is not the case. The two models simply do not cater to the same clientele. If you are nostalgic for the good old R5 and prioritize urban use and/or single couple usage, the Renault 5 is for you. However, forget about family vacations with its tiny trunk. If you want to use your car for family trips, but not too far, the Megane will meet your needs. There simply is no match because the choice will come down to personal preference or practicality.
