Tesla claims a range of 719 km for the Long Range All-Wheel Drive Model Y on its Chinese website. Really?

Two versions of the Tesla Model Y “Juniper” will be immediately available at launch, with the iconic Rear-Wheel Drive and the Long Range All-Wheel Drive. No major surprises, this follows the launch pattern of the second-generation Tesla Model 3. The Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive and the Performance, or even the Plaid, will follow.

We’ll skip the detailed technical sheet concerning dimensions since this is only a facelift of the existing model. Notably, there is a slight weight increase of 10 kg and a decrease of 20 liters in total cargo volume. These two data points could correspond to the addition of an 8-inch passenger display. No 7-seat versions are offered on these two models; we will have to wait a bit longer. More disappointingly, the maximum charging power remains unchanged at 170 kW for the Rear-Wheel Drive and 250 kW for the Long Range All-Wheel Drive.

However, the range was the main focus of this new iteration, and it does not disappoint. Tesla even announces a range of 719 km for the Long Range All-Wheel Drive… but based on the Chinese CLTC cycle. Oh, what a false hope. This is not entirely disappointing because, if we do a quick proportion based on existing models, we get about 600 km on the WLTP cycle. Not bad, considering it currently offers 533 km! Similarly, the Rear-Wheel Drive would go from 455 to 495 km of range.

It is very unlikely that the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive will reach that symbolic 700 km mark on a single charge, but 650 km will surely be achieved, setting a new benchmark for a mass-market vehicle around 50,000 euros.
