50 Electric Vehicles Put to the Mega Challenge

The team from the YouTube channel “La Chaîne EV” tested 50 electric vehicles on the same route, at the same time to determine the most efficient.

On March 26th, the team from the YouTube channel “La Chaîne EV”, specialized in detailed electric car tests, gathered 50 vehicles in the Arcachon basin to measure the efficiency, and thus the range, of each model.

Named “Mega Challenge” by the founders of La Chaîne EV, this event established a unique ranking to date. From the least expensive, the Dacia Spring, to the most extreme with the formidable Tesla Model X Plaid, including two motorcycles, the 50 selected vehicles traveled a 96 km route divided into 3 major zones: an urban area, a road section, and a highway, for a total trip of 1 hour and 45 minutes under consistent traffic conditions and speeds. Enough to legitimize the measured consumption figures.

The first lesson of the Mega Challenge: a motorcycle consumes twice less than the least greedy of electric cars, the Hyundai Ioniq 28 Executive. Light mobility is therefore promising a bright future.

Modest range but impressive efficiency for the Dacia Spring, which lives up to its status as a best-seller. Conversely, a monster range of over 600 km for the Mercedes EQS but a poor 43rd position in the ranking.

Newness does not necessarily mean efficiency, as some recent models turn out to be more power-hungry than those they replace. For example, the Kia Niro EV consumes more than the Kia eNiro, although the latter has a clear advantage in being less well equipped.

Finally, while large-size tires are more aesthetic, they are also more energy-consuming. For example, a Tesla Model Y rear-wheel drive has a range of 453 km with 19-inch wheels versus 417 km with 20-inch wheels.
