1300 Horsepower for BYD’s YangWang U9

BYD has launched the homologation process for its Hypercar YangWang U9, revealing extraordinary technical specifications.

We recently revealed the video of the Hypercar moving on only 3 wheels thanks to its hydraulic suspension DiSus-X. We now know a little more about this phenomenon of a car.

YangWang, BYD’s premium brand, was launched at the beginning of 2023. Its first vehicle is a massive SUV, the U8, which features four electric motors with a combined power of 880 kW (1,197 horsepower) and can not only float but also move on water! The second model introduced by the brand was therefore supposed to match the grandeur of such a machine… and it certainly does!

The YangWang U9 boasts impressive dimensions of 4.966 m in length, 2.029 m in width, and 1.295 m in height. With a wheelbase of 2.900 m, it proudly displays its sporty pedigree. Evidence of this is the fixed rear wing made of carbon fiber, which is available in its options catalog and positioned behind the shark fin.

Proof that this is indeed an electric car, the U9 has a curb weight of 2,475 kg, almost twice that of a thermal Porsche 911. The bulk of this weight is of course due to the battery packs, but it takes a lot of energy to power the four proprietary electric motors of 240 kW each. In total, you have 960 kW, or 1,305 hp, available under your right foot. “Light is Right,” said Colin Chapman, founder of Lotus… Different times, different technologies.

In exchange for this weight, which is probably unbearable during sporty driving, you will have a range of 700 km under reasonable use. Nothing prevents you from hitting 0 to 100 km/h in 2 seconds for the sheer thrill and reaching over 300 km/h, of course on a track.

While we love the design of this car and its technical features, it unfortunately has the profile of a World Champion of straight-line racing. But BYD managed to mitigate the weight sensation on its Seal Excellence thanks to exceptional chassis, so let’s dream a little while waiting for perhaps one day the chance to take the wheel.
