Comparison of Renault Espace 6 vs Espace 5: The Truth in Numbers

Does the new generation of Renault Espace 6 deserve its legendary name? Mobiwisy took out its measuring tape to compare it with the Espace 5.

Here’s a “Grand Austral” that won’t admit it. Marketing has its reasons that reason sometimes ignores. Never mind, Renault has chosen to distinguish two models in its lineup sharing the same components, mimicking the logic and economic-industrial relevance of Peugeot with its 3008 and 5008.

It remains that a prestigious badge like Espace is earned… and upon reading the following figures, the new Espace 6 offers little of it. Launched in 2015, the Espace 5 added a premium touch to its historically family-oriented positioning. Today, demand for 7-seater vehicles is very high, and Renault responds quickly and intelligently. Perhaps with a less spacious vehicle, but one that will also be more affordable. The explanation for this is below:

Trunk volumes
– 7 seats deployed: -88 liters. Drop from 247 to 159 liters, a 36% decrease!
– Max forward-sliding bench and 2 folded seats: +63 liters. Increase from 614 to 688 liters, a 10% boost!
– All rear seats folded: -387 liters. Drop from 2101 to 1714 liters, a 19% decrease!

Mechanics

From a mechanical perspective, it should be noted that the new Renault Espace 6 will only offer one engine option. It is a small 1.2-liter full hybrid 3-cylinder engine with a total power of 200 horsepower. Sufficient to transport the family peacefully.

This engine contributes to a significant reduction in total weight: -215 kg, for a final weight of 1597 kg. A noteworthy performance that benefits handling and fuel economy, homologated at 4.6 liters per 100 km in WLTP combined cycle. In reality, one should expect around 6.5 liters per 100 km.
