The French automotive market declines sharply in April

Motorcycles, mopeds, new or used cars: sales are down everywhere!
The automotive market situation in France is not improving. Registrations have indeed fallen by 22.58% in April. In total, the French Automotive Platform – or simply PFA – recorded 108,723 registrations in the Hexagon.
April 2022 had one less working day compared to April 2021, but that alone doesn’t fully explain the decline in sales observed. The health crisis and then the semiconductor shortage have deeply weakened the automotive sector. The war in Ukraine and the soaring fuel prices further complicate the situation.
Since the beginning of 2022, the French automotive market has experienced an 18.6% decrease, with 474,083 cars registered.
Electric car sales are rising
The overall energy market situation contrasts sharply with that of electric cars, which rose by 33% in April. In total, 12% of the cars registered last month were electric models. Hybrid models captured 30% of the market, despite a slight decline in sales (-3% for conventional hybrids, -8% for rechargeable hybrids).
Meanwhile, SUVs continue to sell well. Despite a 19% decline in April, they still accounted for nearly one in two sales (46%). It is therefore possible to link the increase in electrified cars to the success of SUVs, although interest in the latter began before the significant rise in electric and hybrid sales.
Used car market in decline
Once spared, the used car market is also suffering. It declined by 16.9% in April, with 434,730 transactions recorded by AAA Data.
‘It is very clear that customers are looking for more affordable and economical used models, especially electric, hybrid, or those running on bioethanol‘, explains Marie-Laure Nivot, Market Intelligence Manager at AAA Data.
April was also a poor month for the motorcycle market, down by 12.5%. The situation is even worse for mopeds, which declined by 27%. Notably, due to the collapse in registrations of AMI (-74.8%).
