Audi returns to the historical nomenclature of its models

nomenclature Audi

Audi reverts to a letter to define the general structure of the model and a number to establish its placement in the segment.

Audi announces a reversal in the nomenclature of its models to simplify the understanding of its range for customers worldwide. From now on, model designations will be based exclusively on segment and positioning, without distinguishing between electric and combustion engine variants.

“This new nomenclature is the result of in-depth discussions with our customers and distributors around the world, explains Marco Schubert, member of the management board of AUDI AG responsible for sales and marketing. It provides an intuitive reading of our range. Our customers will be able to easily understand the size and positioning of a model at first glance.”

A standardized alphanumeric structure

The new Audi nomenclature is based on a combination of letters and numbers:

  • The letters A and Q will continue to distinguish low chassis models (sedans, station wagons) from SUVs.
  • The numbers, from 1 to 8, reflect the segment and positioning, regardless of the type of engine.

Thus, the previous distinctions based on even numbers (electric vehicles) and odd numbers (combustion engines) no longer apply. Now, the same designation, such as “A6,” can include electric or combustion variants, differentiated by their engine (e-tron, TFSI, TDI, etc.) or their body type (Sedan, Avant, Sportback).

The first model using this nomenclature, the Audi A6 with combustion engine, will be unveiled on March 4, 2025. This model embodies the legacy of the brand in the premium sedan segment. For example, the A6 Avant TFSI will be distinct from the A6 Avant e-tron thanks to the existing engine codes. No name changes will be applied to existing models.

No clarification is provided on the sporty R and RS variants, which are expected to remain unchanged.
