62 Years Ago, the Aston Martin DB5 Entered Legend Thanks to James Bond

The Aston Martin DB5 has become a global automotive icon thanks to its mythical role alongside James Bond.

On September 17, 1963, Aston Martin first unveiled the DB5 to the public, an elegant GT that would quickly become one of the most famous cars in the world. Designed as the evolution of the DB4, it stood out with its refined design by Carrozzeria Touring, solid performance for the time, and a build quality that placed it among the best British automobiles of the early 1960s.

Under its hood, it featured a 4.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine developing about 282 horsepower, capable of propelling the car to over 230 km/h, a remarkable speed for that era. But while the Aston Martin DB5 has entered legend, it is not solely due to its technical specifications: it is primarily its association with James Bond that has elevated it to the status of a cultural icon.

The bond was forged in 1964 with the film Goldfinger. For the first time, 007, played by Sean Connery, took the wheel of this Aston Martin equipped with gadgets imagined by Q: rotating license plate, machine guns, bulletproof shield, and even an ejector seat. These accessories, although fictional, immediately captured the collective imagination and bestowed an unmatched aura upon the DB5.

The DB5 Forever in History

Since then, the car has made regular appearances in the saga, from GoldenEye in the 1990s to Daniel Craig’s films like Skyfall and No Time To Die. Each appearance has reinforced its status as the “official car of James Bond,” to the point where it has become inseparable from the character.

This association has also had a direct impact on Aston Martin. While the brand remained relatively unknown compared to more powerful manufacturers like Ferrari or Jaguar, the image of prestige and sophistication associated with James Bond has helped firmly establish Aston Martin in the global collective imagination. The DB5 thus paved the way for a lasting relationship between the British firm and the 007 franchise, which continues to this day.
