The 10 Innovations of the New Audi S3

The Audi S3 prototype testing in Oman offers a glimpse of the increased driving dynamics resulting from numerous innovations.

Audi presents us with a top 10 of developments that will allow the compact sports car to reach a new level:

1 – More power: The 2.0 TFSI four-cylinder engine benefits from an increased power of 23 hp and an additional 20 Nm of torque, now offering 245 kW (333 hp) and 420 Nm of torque. The Audi S3 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds.

2 – Optimized engine tuning: The pre-charged turbocharger ensures a more spontaneous power distribution of the 2.0 TFSI. At constant speed and during low to medium acceleration over the partial load range, the turbo maintains a steady RPM. Additionally, the throttle butterfly, which opens during boost phases, improves performance.

3 – A more sporty transmission: The seven-speed S tronic gearbox now allows for a more spontaneous start, thanks to a higher initial torque. This is achieved by more strongly compressing the corresponding clutch lining. Furthermore, the full-load gear shift times have been halved.

4 – The torque distributor: Like the Audi RS 3, the Audi S3 now features a torque distributor. This technology enables an active and fully variable distribution of torque between the rear wheels.

5 – New Audi drive select mode: Six different profiles allow for a wide range of driving experiences. With the new “dynamic plus” mode, the S3 prototype demonstrates a more playful behavior with a tendency to oversteer. The electronic stability control (ESC) is automatically activated in sport mode.

6 – More sporty front axle: A McPherson wishbone front axle with a new steering knuckle is installed at the front, doubling the negative camber. This increased tilt towards the road surface, meaning a larger angle between the wheel plane and vertical, improves steering response as well as lateral control.

7 – Optimized progressive steering: Progressive steering offers the advantage of an angle-dependent ratio, meaning the more the driver turns, the more direct the steering becomes.

8 – More powerful brakes: The Audi S3 is now equipped with larger ventilated discs on the front axle. The 18-inch steel brake measures 357 mm in diameter and is 4 mm thicker at 34 mm than before.

9 – More performant tires: A new 19″ 235/35 setup puts the power to the road. Furthermore, D-labeled tires are characterized by precise road holding across the entire speed spectrum.

10 – New generation electronic stability control: All of the Audi S3’s suspension control systems have been specially developed to ensure dynamic response in corners and good road holding.
