Volkswagen ID. Tiguan: a successful name, a heavy responsibility

Expected in early 2027, the ID. Tiguan borrows the name of the Volkswagen bestseller to convince families to switch to electric.

Can a name change the fate of a car? Volkswagen is clearly counting on this. The new ID. Tiguan will seal the fate of the ID.4 and ID.5 names to capitalize on a reference that is otherwise much more familiar. After the ID. Polo, this strategy brings electric vehicles closer to the models that built the manufacturer’s reputation.

The legacy imposes certain obligations. Volkswagen claims more than 8.3 million Tiguans produced and presents its SUV as the group’s best-selling model. In 2025, the combined deliveries of the Tiguan and Tayron even exceeded one million units. Note: this total refers to both models, not just the Tiguan.

Being a Tiguan is earned !

The ID. Tiguan will therefore need to earn its name. Space, comfort, perceived quality, and ease of use will be scrutinized as much as the range. Volkswagen promises a completely redesigned look and an uplifting presentation. The first prototype tests published by Automobile Propre mostly reveal a welcome evolution: buttons on the steering wheel, physical controls for the air conditioning, and an enlarged instrument display. This will make daily gestures feel more natural.

This reconquest occurs in a contrasting context. Despite its commercial power, Volkswagen delivered around 382,000 fully electric cars worldwide in 2025, a nearly stable volume. The name change may help reassure buyers, but price, highway range, and charging will remain decisive factors in turning this familiarity into orders.

However, the manufacturer maintains a solid safety net: the thermal and hybrid Tiguan will continue its career alongside. Customers will thus be able to choose their engine type without leaving this reassuring family. For the ID. Tiguan, the challenge will be precisely there: to recapture the essence of the original model without charging too high a price for the switch to electric.
