The Renault Zoe takes the lead with a spectacular drop of 65% over five years. The direct consequence is that the model, which was long the French reference for electric cars, is now priced around 10,000 euros. This allows access to a versatile city car for a fraction of its original price.
Even cheaper, the Dacia Spring is priced at an average of 8,347 euros. Paradoxically, it is also the one that retains its value best in the study, with a depreciation of “only” 53%. The Renault Twingo electric also allows staying under the 10,000 euros mark.
Luxury cars also depreciate
For those looking for more autonomy and versatility, the market also holds some pleasant surprises. The Tesla Model 3, the best-selling electric car in France in 2020, has lost 56% of its value over five years and can now be found for under 25,000 euros.
Between these two extremes, the offer has significantly expanded: Fiat 500e, Mini Electric, Volkswagen ID.3, Peugeot e-2008, or Kia Niro now allow choosing between city cars, compacts, and SUVs.
This heavy depreciation is therefore bad news for the first owner but an excellent opportunity for the next. With one precaution, however: before buying a second-hand electric car, it is better to check the health of its battery, its history, and the warranty it still benefits from.
