Long before the birth of Tesla, we were promised flying cars since the future is the future. This time, Elon Musk assures that they are really coming. In response to an internet user joking on X that humanity had acquired artificial intelligence but still no famous flying cars, the Tesla chief simply replied: “You will get flying cars.”
A little phrase that’s timely. Because behind the jest likely lies the Tesla Roadster, this electric supercar announced in 2017 and since then one of the most famous legends in the automotive industry.
For several years, Musk has indeed mentioned a mysterious “SpaceX package” for the Roadster. This would involve cold gas thrusters designed to dramatically improve acceleration, braking, and steering. But most importantly, some could be directed downward to allow the car to… take off.
A flying Tesla, but not really
However, there’s no question of flying from Brussels to Paris above the highway. Musk’s various statements suggest a car capable of briefly leaving the ground or performing some sort of hover, and not a true eVTOL with significant aerial autonomy.
The subject has become particularly serious this summer. According to recent reports from Reuters and The Information, Tesla is preparing a demonstration of the Roadster for the end of August, while a very limited version using this technology developed with SpaceX is in the works. Tesla’s chief designer, Franz von Holzhausen, has also stated that the new Roadster would be unveiled “very soon.”
The story is all the more delicious since in 2017 Elon Musk was rather skeptical about flying cars, envisioning the stress of seeing vehicles pass overhead.
