Volkswagen Smart eBike: radar, camera, and connected helmet for an ultra-secure electric bike

Volkswagen will unveil its new Smart eBike at IFA Berlin 2026, an electric bike equipped with a rear radar, a camera, and several safety technologies derived from the automotive industry.

Volkswagen is closely interested in connected electric bikes. During IFA Berlin 2026, held from September 4 to 8, the manufacturer will present the Volkswagen Smart eBike, developed and produced by n+ under the license of the German brand. Its uniqueness lies in translating several safety technologies that are already widely used in the automotive sector to the bike.

The main innovation of the Volkswagen Smart eBike is called Smart View. This system combines a rear radar and a camera integrated into the fender with a color display mounted on the handlebars. The radar monitors traffic up to 70 meters behind the cyclist and detects vehicles or other users approaching more quickly.

Three display modes are available. The cyclist can check riding information, display the rear camera continuously, or select an automatic mode. In the latter case, the screen switches to the rear view as soon as the radar detects an approaching vehicle.

Volkswagen translates driving assistance to the electric bike

The system also affects the bike’s lighting. LED strips integrated into the frame become brighter when a vehicle approaches and also serve as turn signals and brake lights.

This safety ecosystem also includes Smart Glasses. Their microOLED display can show alerts from the radar, Google Maps navigation, speed, or battery levels directly within the user’s line of sight.

Finally, the Smart Helmet features over 500 lumens of lighting, mimics braking and turning signals, and incorporates fall detection which can automatically alert emergency contacts.
