Jaguar Type 01: Does its minimalist interior go too far?

Jaguar unveils the interior of the Type 01, its upcoming luxury electric GT. Minimalist, spectacular and radical according to the brand. Cold, empty, and frankly bewildering according to us.

Jaguar aims to reinvent automotive luxury with the Type 01. After an exterior design that has already sparked much discussion, the British brand now reveals its cabin. And this time, it’s hard to hide our disappointment: the minimalism of the Jaguar Type 01 seems to have turned mostly into stylistic emptiness.

However, simplicity is not necessarily the enemy of luxury. Tesla has shown that a dashboard free of superfluous elements can become a true aesthetic signature. More recently, the Ferrari Luce proved that this philosophy can also work in a very high-end vehicle. It’s worth noting that its interior design bears the mark of Jony Ive, the man who turned functional minimalism at Apple into a genuine design school.

It lacks a soul

Jaguar is now trying to take a similar path. But something has been lost along the way. The brand emphasizes a spectacular central column running through the entire cabin, materials inspired by travertine, hidden technologies, and an extremely thin dashboard. The narrative evokes a “distinctive interior architecture” and a blend of “drama and theatre.” In the initial images, we are mainly searching for emotion.

The whole seems cold, almost clinical. The massive central divider visually weighs down the cabin while the dashboard appears desperately empty. And what to say about these smooth, shapeless seats.

Then there’s the two-spoke steering wheel. Massive, deformed and visually confusing, it seems to have been designed to provoke rather than to drive. Its ergonomics will obviously need to be verified on the road, but its form already leaves one perplexed.
