Ford partners with Chinese giant Geely
The Spanish factory in Valencia becomes the symbol of the new strategic alliance between Ford and the Chinese group Geely.
The American automaker Ford and the Chinese group Geely have officially announced a major industrial partnership in Europe. The two companies will create a joint venture responsible for operating Ford’s Almussafes plant, near Valencia, Spain. In this new structure, Ford will hold 66% of the capital, while Geely will own 34%.
This alliance between Ford and Geely comes at a time of significant transformation in the automotive industry. Faced with the considerable investments required to develop new vehicles, manufacturers are multiplying collaborations to share costs, technical platforms, and technologies related to electrification.
Union of Interests
The Spanish factory, whose activity has significantly declined in recent years with the discontinuation of several models, must regain new momentum. Starting in 2028, it will host the production of several vehicles aimed at the European market. Two electric SUVs from Geely will be assembled there, while Ford will produce a future Bronco intended for Europe as well as a new crossover developed jointly by both groups. The latter is expected to be offered with several powertrains to meet the varying needs of European markets.
For Ford, this partnership with Geely allows it to benefit from the Chinese manufacturer’s expertise in platforms and electrified technologies while maintaining a competitive industrial base in Europe. On its part, Geely continues its strategy of establishing a presence on the continent. Producing locally will also help mitigate the impact of tariffs imposed by the European Union on electric vehicles manufactured in China.
