Polestar 5: The Chinese Electric Grand Tourer in Scandinavian Style

With its Polestar 5, the Swedish brand is taking on the market for luxury electric grand tourers with a model that is as ambitious as it is confidential.

Still relatively unknown to the general public in France, Polestar continues its development with a new flagship model: the Polestar 5. This large electric sedan, nearly five meters long, marks an important milestone for the young premium brand, created in Sweden but owned by the Chinese group Geely, which also owns Volvo.

Founded in 2017 after having long served as a sports division for Volvo, Polestar cultivates a distinctly Scandinavian image through its clean design, onboard technologies, and approach to electric mobility. A positioning that sometimes tends to overshadow its industrial roots within a Chinese automotive giant.

An ambitious technical sheet

Stemming from the Precept concept unveiled in 2020, the Polestar 5 presents itself as a large electric sedan with four doors. Its aluminum architecture, 112 kWh battery, and 800-volt electrical system testify to a design oriented towards performance and long journeys.

Two versions are offered. The Dual Motor delivers up to 748 hp and claims a range of up to 670 km according to WLTP, while the Performance version reaches 884 hp and 1,015 Nm of torque. The latter can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, figures that place it in the very exclusive circle of the most powerful electric sedans on the market.

The interior emphasizes comfort with a 4+1 seating configuration, recycled or bio-based materials, and an Android Automotive multimedia system with integrated Google services.

Then there’s the question of price. Starting at 119,900 euros and going up to 143,900 euros for the Performance version, the Polestar 5 operates in a sphere that is inaccessible to most motorists. At this price level, it targets more the customers of Porsche Taycan, Mercedes-AMG EQS, or Tesla Model S Plaid than drivers looking for a simple transition to electric vehicles.
