BMW X5

The fifth generation of BMW’s premium SUV is completing its development and inaugurates an unprecedented multi-energy strategy for the brand.

The upcoming BMW X5 is entering its final testing phase before its commercial launch. Currently being tested around the Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, where it will be produced, the fifth generation of the large Bavarian SUV is set to mark a turning point in the model’s history.

For the first time, the BMW X5 will be offered with five different powertrain technologies depending on the markets. Alongside traditional gasoline and diesel engines electrified by 48V mild hybrid technology, the range will include plug-in hybrid versions, a fully electric variant called BMW iX5, as well as a hydrogen variant expected around 2028.

BMW is paving its way

The BMW iX5 introduces the sixth generation of the brand’s eDrive technology. It is built on an 800-volt electric architecture and features a record-high voltage battery for a BMW model, reaching up to 144 kWh. Powered by two electric motors and equipped with xDrive all-wheel drive, it delivers up to 578 hp in its iX5 60 xDrive version.

BMW is also preparing for the arrival of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, the first series-produced hydrogen model by the manufacturer. Unsurprisingly, it will be based on a new generation of fuel cell technology and an innovative storage system that preserves interior space while facilitating its integration into existing production lines. While manufacturers are mostly leaning towards hydrogen thermal solutions, this choice is surprising, but much can change by 2028…
