Tesla Roadster: Still Awaiting, But Hope Remains

At Tesla, the Roadster has become much more than just a model: it’s a true phantom.

Unveiled with great fanfare in 2017, this electric Roadster was initially expected to enter pre-production in 2020. Six years later, it has yet to see the light of day and is now over three years behind its commercialization schedule.

We know that the future Roadster will be produced at the Gigafactory Texas and according to the latest statements, things should start to become clearer “in the coming months”, hinting at a new phase of communication surrounding the project.

This announcement comes as observers were anticipating a launch event promised by Elon Musk. The Tesla CEO had suggested that a demonstration could occur in the spring, with some even mentioning a reveal on April 1st. A symbolic date that would have perfectly matched a project whose promises sometimes seem to verge on science fiction. But once again, the deadline passed without any official presentation.

Who are we waiting for?

Over the years, Tesla has kept the anticipation alive by mentioning unprecedented performance, lightning-fast acceleration, and even an option pack developed with SpaceX. Franz von Holzhausen, the brand’s chief designer, along with Lars Moravy, have regularly stated that the Roadster would justify this long wait.

In the meantime, Tesla has prioritized other programs, from renewing its models to launching the production of the Cybercab. However, the Roadster remains a standalone project in the lineup, which Musk describes as “the best of the last cars driven by humans.”
