Stellantis invents the European Kei car

With its E-Car project, Stellantis is reviving the idea of a popular microcity car in a 100% electric version inspired by the famous Japanese Kei-cars.

In the face of skyrocketing electric vehicle prices and the increasing congestion of urban SUVs, Stellantis chooses to go against the market trend. The automotive group has officially launched the E-Car project, an affordable small electric vehicle that will enter production as early as 2028 at the historic site of Pomigliano d’Arco in Italy. Behind this announcement lies a cultural revolution: the arrival of a true European Kei-car.

Born in Japan after the war, the concept of Kei-car (“light car”) is based on a simple idea: to offer ultra-compact, economical automobiles perfectly suited for city centers. These models, which have become essential in Japan, appeal for their low energy consumption, simplicity, and practicality. These qualities are now particularly relevant in European metropolises committed to the electric transition.

Simple and full of common sense

With its future E-Car, Stellantis is transposing this philosophy to Europe. The manufacturer promises a compact, innovative, and accessible vehicle designed for daily commutes and built on a “mobility for all” logic. The “E” also stands for European, Emotional, Electric, and Ecological.

Importantly, this strategy comes at a critical moment. The segment of small cars is gradually disappearing under the weight of regulations and development costs, leaving many drivers without an affordable option. Supported by the European Commission, the E-Car project aims precisely to democratize locally produced electric vehicles.
