Everything You Need to Know About Social Leasing 2026
The Social Leasing will make a comeback in the summer of 2026 after two editions that funded over 100,000 electric cars.
In the context of rising energy prices, the Social Leasing scheme remains one of the main public levers to democratize electromobility for low-income households.
A delayed launch in July 2026
Initially expected in June, the scheme is now set to launch in July 2026, according to information provided by the Minister Delegate for Energy, Maud Bregeon. This delay aims to allow manufacturers and lessors to finalize their offers and adapt their models.
A more complex aid system
A major innovation in this edition: the bonus system is evolving. Until now, a single aid of around €7,000 was applied to vehicles that met the eco-score to reduce the rental payment.
In 2026, several levels of aid will be introduced:
- €6,500 for a vehicle simply eco-scored
- €7,000 if the engine is produced in Europe
- €9,000 if the battery is assembled in Europe
- Up to €9,500 if both engine and battery are European
Two formulas are expected to coexist, one of which is dedicated to high-mileage users to better target intensive usage.
Eligibility conditions: few changes
The social criteria are expected to remain similar to those of 2025. The scheme still targets low-income households, with a taxable reference income of €16,300 or less per share. Access is also conditioned on professional use of the vehicle. Commuting distances of more than 15 km or more than 8,000 km per year are considered.
Rents and vehicles
The principle remains that of a lease of at least three years, with rents kept below €200 per month. Eligible models are expected to mainly come from European manufacturers and meet strict criteria regarding price, weight, and eco-score.
