Is the cheapest Tesla Model Y the most disappointing?

Tesla loves to keep us guessing, and the new Model Y Standard Long Range is a perfect illustration of this.

In France, this version now boasts a record range of 657 km in WLTP cycle, simply the best ever announced in the Model Y lineup! An impressive feat, especially for a finish presented as entry-level. But behind this technical prowess, is the proposition really coherent?

Launched in the fall under the symbolic threshold of 40,000 euros, the Model Y Standard focused on the essentials: reduced equipment, simplified design, and already comfortable range of 534 km. Now, Tesla has integrated the large battery from the Long Range version. The result: a boost of 123 km and a much faster charging rate, with power increased to 250 kW, compared to 170 kW before. On the highway, this argument is solid, and for professionals, it’s essential… But we will come back to this last point.

With its unattractive 18-inch wheels, this version even surpasses the Model Y Premium Long Range, limited to 622 km due to its 19-inch wheels. In terms of pure efficiency, Tesla has truly hit a home run here.

Who is this Model Y really aimed at?

The problem lies in the pricing positioning. Priced at €44,990, this Model Y Standard Long Range costs €5,000 more than the classic Standard version, and only €2,000 less than the Model Y Premium Long Range. A gap that is too small considering the concessions made.

Because to save that €2,000, one has to give up many features: panoramic glass roof, ventilated seats, ambient lighting, 8-inch rear screen, electrically adjustable steering wheel, not to mention a simplified suspension that is less comfortable on a daily basis. All elements that typically contribute to the Tesla experience.

So, who is this Model Y really aimed at? Primarily professionals. For a VTC driver or a taxi, maximum range, fast charging, and controlled costs outweigh comfort or aesthetics. In this context, this Model Y becomes a remarkably effective tool.

For an individual, however, the calculation is more debatable. At this price point, the cheapest Model Y is not necessarily the most relevant… nor the most appealing in the long term. Thus, being better when you’re standard isn’t necessarily the best idea.
