November 2025 marks a record for electric cars in France, but the transition remains fragile and poorly calibrated.

In November 2025, electric car sales in France reached a historic level. More than one in four new vehicles sold was electrified, combining 100% electric models and plug-in hybrids. On paper, this is an impressive record for the French automotive market, but behind these flattering figures lies a fragile reality.

A large part of this success relies on ecological bonuses for individuals and incentives for greening corporate fleets. These tax aids clearly stimulate demand, but they mask the market’s dependence on these mechanisms. Without them, the growth of electric vehicles could quickly slow down.

Meanwhile, the thermal engines make a comeback!

At the same time, some political discussions in Europe are considering delaying the ban on thermal vehicles beyond 2035, providing a reprieve for polluting engines. A contradictory signal that reminds us that the electric transition, despite its inevitable nature, is far from being perfectly mastered.

Forcing this transition too quickly, by imposing strict standards and heavy constraints, can lead to strategic mistakes. Manufacturers would benefit from having more leeway to manage this transformation at their own pace, adjusting their ranges and production to market realities. A more gradual approach would be more effective and sustainable.

November 2025 thus illustrates a paradox. The electric transition is progressing and sales are booming, but the market remains fragile. Current success still largely depends on subsidies and uncertain political decisions.
