Tesla Model Y Standard

What was already more than a rumor is confirmed. Tesla is preparing a more affordable Standard version of its electric SUV, the Model Y.

The information now appears to be confirmed, following the appearance of the “Model Y Standard” in the official website’s source code. According to these leaks, this new entry-level model is expected to be offered from $39,990, or approximately €37,800 at the current exchange rate.

A price that, on paper, would help broaden the clientele of Tesla’s bestselling vehicle. But the reality is less exciting. To achieve this price reduction, the Californian manufacturer has made numerous sacrifices on the equipment.

The Model Y Standard would feature a slightly revised design, with single-unit headlights and a new bumper incorporating a front camera. However, the light bar running across the front disappears. More troubling, the large panoramic glass roof is replaced by a fixed opaque glass roof, reducing brightness and the feeling of space.

A limited price gap and much fewer features

Inside, concessions are even more noticeable: textile finishes instead of premium materials, manually adjustable steering wheel, disappearance of the secondary screen for rear passengers, and removal of the HEPA filtration system. Even the ventilation for the second row becomes manual again. The dashboard still retains the impressive 15.4-inch central screen, Tesla’s hallmark, and the cargo space remains generous at 2,120 liters, although slightly reduced compared to the Long Range version.

The issue is that the price difference remains relatively modest. The rear-wheel-drive Long Range Model Y is currently offered at $44,990, or about €42,600. In other words, the difference is limited to $5,000 (around €4,700), which seems small given all the features that have been removed.

While Tesla faces increasingly aggressive Chinese competition in the compact electric SUV segment, this pricing positioning is likely to disappoint. The Model Y Standard will probably be the most accessible version of the line-up, but some customers might feel that the savings do not truly compensate for the loss of equipment and comfort.
