Renault Scenic, an electric comeback in 2024 with the Dacia Spring II

During its financial results, the group announced the return of the Renault Scenic in electric version for 2024, alongside a new Dacia Spring.

Following a historic loss of over 8 billion euros in 2020, due to the Covid-19 crisis, Renault has returned to profitability. With 967 million euros in 2021, the automotive group is breathing, even though 2022 still sees disruptions from parts shortages, estimating a loss of 300,000 vehicles just in the first half. But Luca De Meo, its recent CEO who took over in mid-2020, looks further ahead.

The CEO recalls the commitment made on February 7 with the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance to launch 35 new electric cars by 2030. On his side, across all powertrain types, Renault will launch 27 new models, including 7 this year, 5 next year, 11 in 2024, and 4 in 2025.

Among them, many electric vehicles will join the lineup. More precisely, there will be 12, including a big sister of the Mégane E-Tech electric.

The Renault Scenic returns in electric in 2024

Luca de Meo casually announces a new Renault Scenic. In any case, the name surprises, as it has become emblematic of the hatchback family car with the diamond logo, launched in 1996 and now in its 4^th generation.

In reality, we already knew the car since the SUV promised by the Morphoz concept car of 2020. The CEO probably wanted to evoke nostalgia rather than the names symbolizing escape (the Austral E-Tech hybrid 200 hp replacing the Kadjar) or innovation in “Zenium” style (a registered name). He had already insisted on adopting the Mégane name for the new electric hatchback.

Behind the name change, the new (or should we say the new SUV?) Renault Scenic arrives late. This electric model was initially supposed to showcase its design at the end of 2022, for a launch in 2023. We will have to wait a bit longer, as the updated brand plan now targets 2024.

A Renault Scenic concept car to wait?

For the impatient, a concept car will reveal the broad outline of future Renaults. To be presented next May, it only shows its front face, which resembles the upcoming electric R5.

For De Meo, it “embodies the vision of sustainable development with three pillars: safety, inclusion, and environment”. It also raises doubts about the propulsion system. “It might be an electric vehicle, or hydrogen” he says, to stimulate interest. The official communication also mentions a hydrogen-powered motorization.

However, the Renault Scenic E-Tech electric 2024 will not stray from its origins. The platform will be the same as the electric CMF-EV of the Mégane or Nissan Ariya. This base will later underpin the future electric Alpine GT crossover in 2025, which might feature the new 200 kW motor produced with Valeo.

A new Dacia Spring already coming!

Available for order since March 2021 and launched in September of the same year, the Dacia Spring is very recent. Yet, Luca De Meo has announced that the next generation will arrive as early as 2024! Why such an early replacement in an automotive world accustomed to 7-year life cycles?

The Dacia Spring has an old design based on the Indian Kwid launched in 2016. Transformed into an electric version via the Renault City K-ZE with Dongfeng in China in 2019, it bears the Dacia badge here. But according to De Meo, the need stems from “adapting to GSR2“, the new regulation imposing certain driver-assistance features, “and connectivity“. He emphasizes that electric remains “a good solution“ to save the A-segment of small city cars, where thermal engines are disappearing quickly.

The second generation of Dacia Spring will thus be a reality in 2 years. More surprisingly, it will reuse the same CMF-A technical base. Will the platform change? In any case, the CEO assures “a better relationship “ with Dongfeng. Renault continues the eGT New Energy Automotive joint venture, despite having ended the partnership in 2020 that allowed it to sell cars in China.

The Renault 5 and R4 electric models in 2024

The upcoming Renault Scenic and Dacia Spring 2 will not be alone. The CEO also takes the opportunity to review the platform CMF-BEV for future small electric cars. The Renault 5 electric will indeed arrive in 2024 as planned, along with a cousin from Alpine, as well as “the successor of the Renault 4 ».

On the manufacturer’s four-year plan diagram, we also notice a new utility vehicle, likely the new Renault Trafic E-Tech electric. It will be linked to hydrogen cousin Hyvia, based on the Master.

Electric Mobilize taxi and anti-Citroën Ami in 2023

Finally, Mobilize, Renault’s new mobility brand, will also have its own new models. While the Dacia Spring already features in Zity’s car-sharing fleet, the Mobilize Limo will be a new electric vehicle aimed at VTC and taxi fleets. Manufactured in China with partner Jiangling Motors, this sedan will be about the size of a Tesla Model 3 and will launch in 2022.

In 2023, the Renault Twizy will have its successor. The Mobilize Duo is a very small electric two-seater aimed at rental services to compete with the Citroën Ami, as well as professionals, with a cargo version called “Bento”.
