Fisker PEAR: the electric car available for pre-orders at 30,000 euros

Second model after the Ocean SUV, the Fisker PEAR will be a more compact electric car, with pre-orders opening before its launch in 2024.

Fisker has been aiming to compete with Tesla for over 15 years. Its founder, Henrik Fisker, previously contrasted the Model S with his Karma, a luxury electric sedan with range extender. After a failed attempt with the Karma brand, the Danish entrepreneur did not give up and relaunched his new company under the same name. The first electric vehicle, the Fisker Ocean SUV, made headlines at CES 2022 in January.

Fisker Pear, rival to ID3 and Mégane?

But he has broader and more accessible ambitions. The upcoming model is named Fisker PEAR, for Personal Electric Automotive Revolution. It promises a price of $29,990, which is its main selling point, roughly €26,670 but likely higher in Europe after taxes. The mystery remains as we do not yet know what this vehicle will look like, co-developed with the Chinese electronics giant Foxconn.

According to the brand, this PEAR embodies a “five-seater, connected, compact, and urban electric car”. However, its description stops there, with few specifications given. Its length is approximately 4.50 meters, about 27 cm shorter than the Ocean.

It could thus be positioned against the Nissan Leaf. More importantly, it will compete at prices similar to smaller models like the Renault Mégane E-Tech, or Volkswagen ID.3 and possibly the upcoming Peugeot e-308. Fisker also provides lots of information and has already invited interested buyers to pre-orders, which open this week for only $250.

Starting in 2024, with big ambitions

When will this new electric car arrive? The SUV Ocean will begin production as early as November 2022, but that does not necessarily mean deliveries at that time. Deliveries are expected to start in early 2023. Leaving space for its debut, the smaller Fisker PEAR will thus wait until 2024. Unlike the Ocean, built in Austria, the PEAR will be Made in the USA.

By then, most compact sedans will be able to offer prices below €30,000. Chinese automakers are already capable of marketing similar cars, such as the MG ZS EV, with the upcoming MG4 being much more modern. Tesla might directly compete with the Pear with its $25,000 car, but this has been postponed, according to Elon Musk.

Nevertheless, this does not dampen the optimism of the manufacturer, which aims for 250,000 annual sales of the Fisker Pear. 250,000 cars per year represents only 0.3% of global production, but is comparable to brands like Porsche or Mini (300,000 units in 2021).
