Renault 4 Concept: An Electric 4L Trophy?

Luca de Meo, CEO of Renault, announced that the electric 4L concept will be produced in France, in Maubeuge, where the Kangoo are already manufactured.

Renault continues to unveil teasers of its future electric 4L. And that’s a good thing! Indeed, only French brands will represent the Old Continent, and expectations are high for reasonably priced electric models.

Produced for nearly 35 years (1961 – 1994) with over 8 million units, the 4L was known for its durability, especially on rough terrains. The charitable car rally “4L Trophy” was created in 1997 and gathers each year about a thousand young teams for a 6,000 km adventure across France, Spain, and Morocco with the goal of distributing school supplies to Moroccan children.

A true source of inspiration for the Renault 4 Concept, which “reinterprets with modernity an iconic model that has left its mark through the 60s, 70s, and 80s. The show car will also appeal to younger generations by celebrating the 25th anniversary of the charitable 4L Trophy rally” according to Gilles Vidal, Renault Design director.

Small or large range?

Intended to replace the Renault Twingo E-Tech, the electric 4L might use the same mechanics as its larger sister ZOE, which features a 110-horsepower electric motor. The question remains about the battery. Will it rely on the 50 kWh pack, which would allow a theoretical range of 400 km? Or will it trust the solution used in the entry-level Mégane E-Tech, with a 40 kWh battery enabling a 300 km range? One thing is certain, to keep an attractive price, economy will be prioritized.
