Top 10 Bestselling Electric and Hybrid Vehicles in September 2022

If the Renault Mégane remains the number 1 electric car in September, the Peugeot 3008 hybrids plug-in and the Toyota Yaris dominate the hybrid market.

As of October 1st, we saw that the electric market accounted for 16% of total registrations in September. Which models made an impact?

Renault Megane has been the No. 1 electric car for 3 months

Since its launch, the Renault Megane E-Tech has overwhelmingly led the electric vehicle market. With nearly 2,900 units sold last month, this French compact continues to top the charts. It surpasses the Tesla Model 3, which typically performs well at quarter’s end, and the Dacia Spring cousin.

The Peugeot e-208 drops to fourth position, but remains the best-selling electric vehicle in 2022 with 14,108 units, compared to 13,022 for the Spring and 12,454 for the Fiat 500. The Italian model dropped out of the 2022 top 5 in September, behind the Renault Twingo E-Tech, with the city car becoming the second best-selling electric vehicle at the expense of the ZOE. The latter, however, has declined from recent years (-31% vs. 2021), allowing the Tesla Model Y to surpass it.

Peugeot 3008: King of Plug-in Hybrids

Unsurprisingly, the Peugeot 3008 Hybrid remains the leader in plug-in hybrids. However, it’s only by a narrow margin in September, as it is closely followed by its cousin, the Citroën C5 Aircross. The new 308 Hybrid rises onto the podium, competing with Mercedes-Benz GLA and DS 7, soon to be restyled. Behind them, the Korean models Hyundai and Kia surround the BMW SUVs, the X3 and X5. Overall, the 3008 maintains its crown in 2022 with 7,938 units sold, but this is a 38% decrease.

Toyota Yaris: Master of Hybrids, but…

After the Prius, Toyota’s Yaris has taken the lead in hybrid technology. It’s no surprise that it maintains its legitimacy as the top position, verified in September 2022 with 2,730 units. However, the Renault Clio E-Tech Full Hybrid is watching closely, as is the Arkana SUV-coupe with the same engine. The Japanese city car still holds the No. 1 spot for the year so far, with 17,398 units, compared to 16,937 for its Yaris Cross SUV variant. The Japanese models outnumber three Renaults—the Arkana, Clio, and Captur, each with over 14,000 registrations.
