Future Volvo mystery: Is it the Volvo EX30 electric car?

During the presentation of the Volvo EX90, the Swedish brand previewed another new model, which would be the next EX30.

Like Marvel movies in theaters, you need to stay until the end of automotive presentations to not miss a detail. The preview reveal of the EX90 lasted more than an hour, at the end of which CEO Jim Rowan bid us farewell with a classic “Goodbye.” But there was no black screen or end of broadcast. The electric SUV reappeared on a screen, with a blurred image, and then a second vehicle briefly appeared. It is the Volvo EX30.

From the EX90 to the EX30, the contrasts of the Volvo range

Like any good teaser, we don’t see much. But it’s enough to understand the nature of this new Volvo. We notice a silhouette on a light background, indicating that it is much smaller than the EX90 (nearly 5 meters, as a reminder).

So, a small SUV, but which one? A Volvo EX90, which would sit below the current XC40 Recharge and the C40. The latter is expected, in the near future, to change its name to EX40, leaving the XC40 for hybrid models.

A rival to the Mégane and ID.3?

The Volvo EX30 will therefore be the distant successor to the compact C30, which disappeared in 2012. This car aimed to compete with the Audi A3 and BMW Series 1. Interestingly, the last generation of C30 considered electric prototypes as early as 2011. However, it showed its limitations: 150 km of range and 110 hp of power. A version that was never developed further.

The new model will probably be similar in size, around 4.25 meters. A size that would position it in the territory of the Renault Mégane E-Tech Electric, Volkswagen ID.3, or MG4. We will probably have to wait several weeks or even months to learn more about this model, which we hope will start under €40,000 (compared to €43,950 for the XC40).
