2023 Auto News: Electric Quadricycles for Eco-Friendly and Cost-Effective Driving

Permis-free cars and quadricycles are changing rapidly, with modern models, electric Mobilize, Ligier or Microlino that will replace the Citroën Ami.

Permis-free cars, in the past, weren’t very sexy. For a long time, they were noisy diesel shoeboxes, admittedly necessary for those without the famous pass. But everything is changing right now, especially with the Citroën Ami revolution. The little chevron has awakened the traditional players, but also new brands. Here are the 2023 updates on electric quadricycles.

The historic Ligier in force

Legendary brand of permit-free cars, Ligier will enter the world of electric vehicles. It previously existed on utility vehicles Pulse 3 and 4, but not yet on small cars. The Ligier Myli will launch the electric era with a new generation of quadricycles, featuring a more modern design. It will offer a full range, with three battery sizes (4, 8, and 12 kWh) for a maximum of 140 km autonomy, starting at €12,499. It will compete with Aixam, whose entry price is significantly higher.

A new Citroën Ami in 2023?

Some heavy electric quadricycles already on the market will improve. The XEV Yoyo is recent, but its design dates back several years and showed some shortcomings. Better comfort, performance, and efficiency are on the agenda. We also hope for better battery management, which previously caused power losses, and maybe removable batteries (available in Italy).

100% Italian, the Estrima Biro will slightly change its style. Without altering its power and battery options (removable 55 km or fixed 100 km), it will feature a more modern interior and will still start at €10,800.

Finally, rumors suggest that the Citroën Ami will also evolve in 2023. Some claim that a version capable of 80 km/h will join the current single 45 km/h version. Requiring a B1 license, it will be more powerful thanks to a potent Valeo motor (up to 15 kW), but also more expensive.

Unusual permit-free cars

It doesn’t look entirely new because it echoes the lines of the old Isetta from the 1950s and 60s. The Microlino has been a developing project for several years but is finally set to launch in 2023. With its distinctive neo-retro shape and a door at the front, it will join the Micro-mobility catalog, which also manufactures electric scooters and soon a three-wheeled scooter.

Another emerging player, the Spanish brand Silence, will move from electric scooters to electric cars. After the very successful S01, the manufacturer will launch the Silence S04, a quadricycle with a very modern design, spacious with a real trunk, disc brakes, rich equipment, and removable batteries (2×75 km).

Electric quadricycles for car-sharing

Discovered in December, Circle is an innovative French car. Without a license, this quadricycle aims to join fleets of various car-sharing operators in France and Europe. You will only be able to rent it for short trips, similar to Mobilize Duo.

This small electric car is descended from the Renault Twizy with its tandem seats designed for service. However, the brand plans long-term rental with a minimum commitment of three months, but no outright purchase.
