Ecological Bonus 2023: What Incentives Are Available for an Electric Car?

Depending on the purchase price and income, the ecological bonus for electric cars in 2023 includes new conditions, also applicable to commercial vehicles.

As of January 1, 2023, the rules change for obtaining the ecological bonus. Buying an electric car remains attractive, since the purchase assistance remains substantial. €5,000 or €7,000 for the ecological bonus in 2023?

The amount decreases in 2023, from €6,000 to €5,000. This sum is a ceiling according to legislation, as the aid is actually 27% of the purchase price. But in practice, a car must cost less than €18,519 to apply this rate. Therefore, keep in mind that all current electric cars on the market qualify for the €5,000 bonus. However, it is not available for a car costing more than €47,000.

So, the bracket from €47,000 to €60,000, which allowed a €2,000 ecological bonus in 2022, is no longer available. A bad news, but with a positive side. Indeed, if your income is less than or equal to €14,089/year, France grants you an additional bonus of €7,000 instead of €5,000.

Conditions to qualify for the ecological bonus in 2023

Be careful, to benefit from the ecological bonus in 2023, you must meet several conditions. Fortunately, they are not restrictive, with some being unnecessary.

• The price must be less than €47,000;
• The price must include the battery if it is leased;
• If leased, the contract must be at least 24 months;
• The weight must not exceed 2,400 kg (this does not apply to any eligible model);
• The car must not have been registered in France or abroad before;
• The car must not be resold within 1 year or 6,000 km after registration;
• A bonus is only possible every 3 years per person.

What bonus in 2023 for electric utility vehicle?

For the purchase of a new electric utility vehicle under 3.5 tons, the bonus remains at 2022 levels in 2023. It is still 40% of the purchase price including taxes, with a ceiling of €6,000 for individuals and €4,000 for companies.

The conditions for obtaining the ecological bonus are the same as for a private electric car, such as weight or resale restrictions before 1 year. Similarly, the additional bonus is possible for any individual with a taxable income (RFR) below €14,090, i.e., a total of €8,000.

Uncertainty about the hydrogen car bonus?

The new feature in 2023 is the maximum ceiling of €47,000. However, the decree clearly states that an eligible car “uses electricity, hydrogen, or a combination of both”. But only two hydrogen vehicles are available on the market, the Hyundai Nexo and Toyota Mirai. The former is an SUV asking for up to €80,400, while the Japanese sedan lists at €72,250. These two models are thus far from the €47,000 ceiling.

Could this be an oversight by the government? Previously, official texts clearly stated that hydrogen cars priced above €60,000 received a €6,000 bonus.
