Top 20 Electric Cars in 2022: And the Number One Is…

The battle for electric car sales in France tightened at the very end of the year, but 2022 rewards a Peugeot over Dacia, while Tesla is content with the podium.

A new double record of electric cars has enlivened the automotive market in France. After a December with nearly 25,000 units, registrations totaled more than 200,000 units, a 25% increase in one year despite a decline overall. Electric vehicles thus captured 13.3% of the market share, approaching diesel, which they should surpass in 2023 without difficulty.

Who succeeds the Tesla Model 3 in 2022?

Meanwhile, the model-by-model review named a new leader in electric car sales in 2022. After the Renault ZOE long on the throne and then Tesla Model 3 in 2021, Peugeot e-208 takes back the crown. With 19,219 registrations, the city car with a lion outperforms its figure from last year (17,858), but falls short of the record of 24,911 units set by the Model 3.

But behind, competition is fierce. Because the Dacia Spring ends the year right behind, with 18,326 units, popular because it is the cheapest electric car on the market. Tesla Model 3 drops to nearly 17,000 units (-32%), a decrease explained by the cannibalism of its cousin Tesla Model Y, approaching 12,000 units.

In fourth place, the Renault Megane E-Tech Electric might have risen to the podium or even finished first, had it started its career only in spring. It even surpasses the Fiat 500 beyond 15,000 units.

Its two older sisters, with older designs, follow with more than 12,000 units, the Renault Twingo charming with its price, while the ZOE, now more expensive (minimum €35,000), saw its sales halve. The two Renaults are still far ahead of the Peugeot e-2008, awaiting an update, and the soon-to-be-replaced Hyundai Kona Electric.
