Volvo EX90: performance, range, and price of the large electric SUV

Equivalent to the XC90, the Volvo EX90 is a large 100% electric luxury 7-seater SUV with a huge battery that provides a range of over 580 km.

Volvo had already launched their first electric SUV in 2020 with the XC40 Recharge, duplicated in the C40 which is its “Coupé 4-seater” version with a different profile. In the premium segment of the Swedish brand, the XC90 born in 2002 received a second generation in 2014, adopting a plug-in hybrid version called “Recharge”. A first step toward electrification, which the Volvo EX90 confirms in November 2022 upon its unveiling. This large electric SUV targets the Audi Q8 e-tron, Mercedes EQE SUV, andTesla Model X. It is also the first model to adopt the “EX” nomenclature specific to electric vehicles.

Dimensions and Interior of the Volvo EX90

The EX90’s name suggests a connection to the XC90, and not just in name, as it follows the same overall shape of its thermal counterpart. While its “pixel” front headlights and rear lights are more modern, the surfaces are also more streamlined, with flush-mounted handles, a lack of a front grille, and fewer protrusions. Volvo pushes further inside with a dashboard featuring a small horizontal screen acting as instruments, and a large vertical screen—which has become the brand’s specialty—housing all functions outside of driving, including climate control. Nearly no physical buttons disrupt the clean, premium materials, although the steering wheel maintains a conventional design.

Imposing with its length of 5.03 meters, the Volvo EX90 ranks as the largest model in the lineup. Its width is important for parking: 1.96 m with mirrors folded, and 2.11 meters unfolded, while the height is 1.74 meters. Spacious, the cabin offers 7 seats as standard, arranged in three rows. The trunk is large, with 655 liters without the third row, and up to 1,915 liters with the second row folded down. A bonus for this electric SUV is a small 34-liter front trunk for storing a bag.

With large dimensions and a massive battery, the EX90 weighs 2,818 kg. It can accept 100 kg on the roof and can tow 750 kg unbraked and up to 2,200 kg braked.

Motors and Performance of the Volvo EX90

Like other Volvo models, the EX90 is offered in two variants. They share the same architecture, featuring two electric motors—one on each axle—delivering power and torque to all four wheels. The Volvo EX90 is therefore all-wheel drive (all-wheel transmission).

The first version is the Twin, with a combined power of 300 kW (408 hp) and a maximum torque of 770 Nm. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in around 5.9 seconds but limits its top speed to 180 km/h, like all other Volvo models. The second version is the EX90 Twin Performance, with 380 kW (517 hp) and 910 Nm, reducing 0-100 km/h time to under 5 seconds.

Range and Charging of the EX90

The Swedish electric SUV launches with a single version equipped with a single battery—yet what a battery! Its capacity is one of the largest in the automotive industry, with 111 kWh of usable energy. This battery is supplied by the global leader CATL, of Chinese origin. Thanks to this large capacity, the Volvo EX90 boasts a very high range: 580 to 585 kilometers according to WLTP cycle, with an estimated consumption of around 21 kWh/100 km. This distance is based on a mixed cycle (and at an ideal temperature of 20°C), so the range on the highway is closer to 400 km, or over 680 km in city driving.

The large energy capacity requires a lengthy recharge. On a standard outlet, it would take 57 hours! Fortunately, the onboard charger accepts up to 11 kW in three-phase, which allows a full charge in 11 hours, compared to 34 hours on a 3.7 kW outlet, or 17 hours on a 7.4 kW wallbox. Using its Combo port, the Volvo EX90 enables one of the fastest recharges on the market, with a maximum power of 250 kW—similar to a Tesla Model Y. This allows charging from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes, despite the enormous battery.

Price and Equipment of the Volvo EX90

Sleek in appearance, the Volvo EX90 also comes in a single trim level. Named Ultra, the electric SUV is well-equipped with a wealth of safety features, driver assistance, infotainment, and comfort options. The EX90 Ultra is available in two versions: Twin and Twin Performance, at very high prices, exceeding those of its cousins Polestar 3 or Lotus Eletre. Here are the launch prices in late 2022:
