Will an electric Mercedes soon rival the Tesla Model 3?

Mercedes already has many vehicles in its electric range, but so far it has no model capable of competing with the Tesla Model 3. That should change soon.

According to journalists Auto Express, Mercedes is preparing to launch a new sedan in its electric lineup. The vehicle, more compact than the EQS and the EQE (cover photo), would target the Tesla Model 3 segment. It would logically be called EQA, but Mercedes is reportedly decided to abandon the two-letter EQ naming convention. With the scheduled phase-out of combustion engines in its lineup (from 2030 in Europe), the star brand now considers it unnecessary to give specific names to its electric models.

This new model would be based on the Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture, specifically designed for entry-level vehicles. It could benefit from the work done on the EQXX, a concept now known for its record-breaking efficiency and impressive range.

Like almost all manufacturers, Mercedes aims to improve battery densities to enhance range and/or create more interior space. Significant advances are expected in this area, possibly as soon as the new sedan arrives. According to the same source, its range would significantly exceed that of a Mercedes EQA SUV.

An electric Mercedes with a new infotainment system

The new Mercedes electric sedan would feature the brand’s new infotainment system (MB.OS for insiders). Development work on this system is ongoing. It is being done internally, not with a partner. This approach differs from that of other automakers, some of whom, for example, turn to Google for their human-machine interface.

The new Mercedes electric sedan could make its first appearance in 2024. However, this information remains to be confirmed.
